Brando's Rebel Yell

CENTENARY CELEBRATION

To commemorate what would have been actor Marlon Brando’s 100th birthday, we proudly present this Festival strand celebrating an icon that revolutionised acting and left an indelible mark on the industry.

Brando’s approach to acting was nothing short of revolutionary - his performances were raw, authentic, and emotionally charged, from Stanley Kowalski in ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ to Terry Malloy in ‘On the Waterfront,’ Brando’s intensity and vulnerability set a new standard for the craft.

His collaborations with visionary directors elevated his career. Who can forget his iconic role as Vito Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘The Godfather’? His legacy extends far beyond the silver screen, with his commitment to social causes sending a powerful message about authenticity and artistic integrity.

We intentionally omit two of his most popular roles (‘Apocalypse Now’ and ‘The Godfather’) to allow room for some lesser-known gems. We revisit some masterpieces, relive his electrifying performances and honour the man who forever changed the face of cinema. Ian Haydn Smith will also present an illustrated talk on the life and films of this cinematic icon.
