Focus on the Documentary:
A documentary presenting Aretha Franklin with choir at the New Bethel Baptist Church in Watts, Los Angeles in January 1972.
In January 1972, the Rev. James Cleveland welcomed Aretha Franklin to the stage of his modest LA church. “I’d wish to remind you,” he stated to a packed house that included his regular parishioners, a camera crew and lots of excited music-lovers (including Mick Jagger) “that this can be a church. And we are right here for a spiritual service.”
There is so much heart and enthusiasm in this movie that it almost eclipses the music - fantastic though that music is. Alan Elliott has unearthed and reassembled the late Sydney Pollack's unfinished documentary after nearly 50 years and created a priceless gift to music fans.
