Amélie

Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain

Jean-Pierre Jeunet | 2001 | 120 MINS
France | Subtitles
Audience Award - Festival 2001

Amélie, an innocent and naive girl in Paris, with her own sense of justice, decides to help those around her and along the way, discovers love.

In Detail

Jean-Pierre Jeunet's candy-coloured 2001 film was a massive art-cinema hit in its day, and Jeunet, along with his co-writer Guillaume Laurant, came up with a tremendously seductive, soufflé-light modern fairytale; its main theme is one of childlike whimsy, but there are unmistakable undertones of sleaziness and malice.

Audrey Tautou's star making performance fits the film like a glove. Twenty-one years on, what comes across most powerfully is Jeunet's athletic, playful directing style, a tour de force of tricks, gags and effects.

It has charm, fluency and style. Buoyant and tasty - a flottante of romantic fun.
