The Making of Movie Magic

With ‘Top Hat’ the summer musical at the Chichester Festival Theatre, this talk will review the careers of Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, and Irving Berlin through their movies, including how they came together to make the memorable film of ‘Top Hat’.
Fred Astaire was new to film, having moved to Hollywood without his sister and partner Adele; Ginger Rogers was a burgeoning film star and also had a Broadway career in New York. Irving Berlin, a very shy man who could not read or write music, had been well known since composing ‘Alexander’s Ragtime Band’ in 1911, when he was in his early 20’s.
Andrew Vance, of the Chichester Cinema Education team, will look back at their careers in film, including clips from classic movies including ‘Bachelor Mother,’ ‘Carefree,’ ’Roxie Hart,’ ‘Holiday Inn,’ ‘On the Beach,’ ‘Top Hat,’ ‘There’s No Business Like Show Business’ and many more.
