Set in a fictional American desert town c.1955. The itinerary of a Junior Stargazer/Space cadet convention (organised to bring together students and parents from across the country for fellowship and scholarly competition) is spectacularly disrupted by world-changing events, including atom-bomb tests taking place just kilometres away.
Anderson taps into the paranoia of the time, with the government and military involved in the reliably madcap proceedings. Yet he also captures the nation’s aspirations and inventiveness through the teenagers at the convention. “There is so much fun to be had and such delight be taken from this film. Though it seems as light as a soufflé, this is more substantial fare than Anderson has been dishing out recently. It merits second, and possibly third, helpings.” (Evening Standard.)
The outstanding cast includes many of Wes Anderson’s trusted favourites, among them Scarlett Johansson, Jason Schwartzman, Tilda Swinton, Adrien Brody, Jeff Goldblum, Bryan Cranston, Willem Defoe and Edward Norton, joined by Anderson debutants Tom Hanks, Margot Robbie, Steve Carrel and Matt Dillon. A sure sign that this is the one current director all actors are clamouring to work with. Prepare to submit to Wes Anderson’s unique charm.
