Ballad of a Small Player

Edward Berger | 2025 | 101 MINS
Germany/UK
When his past and his debts start to catch up with him, a high-stakes gambler laying low in Macau encounters a kindred spirit who might just hold the key to his salvation.

In Detail

Lord Doyle (Colin Farrell) is a pretentious longtime guest of a hotel in Macau – China’s answer to Vegas – that he can barely afford.

His performed posh accent and fake Savile Row gloves mask a working-class Irish pretender, whose luck at the Baccarat table has started to fade. Then there is the small problem of a new hotel guest (Tilda Swinton) who might just know who he really is. ‘Conclave’ and ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ director Edward Berger presents a stylised adaptation of Lawrence Osborne’s novel sold by a killer central performance by Farrell.

He pulls out his acting arsenal in spades, creating an unforgettably flawed yet charming man. Gorgeously shot, this is a visual spectacle that uses sunlight and plush velvet to turn up the technicolour of Macau.
