International Panorama: Japan

Oscar-nominated anime director Mamoru Hosoda returns with an outstanding tale, following a socially awkward girl who transforms herself into a megastar within a virtual world.

In Detail

Anime master Mamoru Hosoda imagines another forward-thinking virtual world, "U", using it as the backdrop for an empowering musical fairytale. Suzu is a shy high school student living in a rural village. For years, she has only been a shadow of herself.

But when she enters "U", a massive virtual world, she escapes into her online persona as Belle, a globally beloved singer. When her concert is interrupted by a terrifying dragon, she tries to identify the identity behind the creature.

'Beauty and the Beast' meets the Metaverse in this cautionary tale about the joys and dangers of growing up in the social media era.

Please note that we will be screening the evening screening (Fri 4 Mar 20:30) in Japanese and the afternoon screening (Sun 6 Mar 12:30) in English.
