Johnny (Joaquin Phoenix) and his young nephew (Woody Norman) forge a tenuous but transformational relationship when they are unexpectedly thrown together in this delicate and deeply moving story about the connections between adults and children, the past and the future, from writer-director Mike Mills.
Phoenix ditches his familiar intensity for sympathy and charm as Johnny endures a short sharp lesson in the difficulties of parenting. Woody Norman as the young nephew Jesse is also a revelation. Robbie Ryan’s monochrome cinematography is lovely and Mills gets to the heart of the story in affecting and uplifting style.
