Film Talk

Professor Andrew Chandler from the University of Chichester presents a talk on the subject of anti-Nazi resistance, opposition and protest in the Third Reich, which has long attracted the attention of filmmakers in Europe and North America and the diverse treatments which the subject has received.

Complementing 'Bonhoeffer' and 'Sophie Scholl: The Final Days'.

In Detail

This season New Park Cinema is showing two very different films about the German Resistance to the Hitler regime. The first is 'Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Spy, Assassin', released in the United States in 2024. The second is a German film, 'Sophie Scholl: The Final Days', first released in 2005.

The subject of anti-Nazi resistance, opposition and protest in the Third Reich has long attracted the attention of film-makers in Europe and North America and the diverse treatments which the subject has received - from documentaries like Hava Kohav Beller's fundamental study, 'The Restless Conscience' (1992) to dramatic interpretations like Tom Cruise's 'Valkyrie' (2008). More recently, in 'Alone in Berlin' (2016), Vincent Pérez interpreted on an early post-war novel by Hans Fallada which had been based, in turn, on the true story of Otto and Elie Hampel.

What kind of a film does 'Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Spy, Assassin' turn out to be and what place might it occupy in what has arguably become a creative tradition?

Andrew Chandler is Professor of Modern History at the University of Chichester. He has published widely on the subject of the German resistance to the Third Reich in its international contexts, emphasizing the place of the Bishop of Chichester, George Bell, and the role of the ecumenical networks which actively supported that resistance. In 2011 he chaired the international panel of historians convened to mark the completion of the complete English language edition of the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Works in New York.
