Prepare to be enthralled by the brilliance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s ‘Cosi Fan Tutte’, subtitled ‘The School for Lovers’, is a masterful exploration of love, fidelity and human folly, presented on the illustrious stage of Teatro alla Scala in Milan.

In Detail

Two officers, Ferrando and Guglielmo, wager with their friend Don Alfonso that their fiancées, Fiordiligi and Dorabella, are truly faithful. Don Alfonso bets they are not, and a plan is hatched to test their love. The men pretend to leave for war and return in disguise to seduce each other's lovers.

The girls, tempted by the new men, question their own affections and, ultimately, the true nature of love. ‘Cosi Fan Tutte’ is a sparkling comedy with a profound undercurrent, exploring themes of loyalty, deception and the complexities of human relationships. Featuring arias and ensembles of unparalleled beauty, this opera stands as a testament to Mozart’s genius.

This timeless opera comes to life under the baton of the exceptional Alexander Soddy, with visionary direction by Robert Carsen. Renowned for his innovative interpretations, Robert Carsen, along with Luis Carvalho, brings to the production a stunning blend of scenic design and costumes that harmonize seamlessly with the intricate emotional landscapes of Mozart’s music.

The evocative lighting by Carsen and Peter Van Praet further elevates the stage, creating an atmosphere of elegance and intrigue.

The performances are nothing short of extraordinary, featuring an international line up of acclaimed artists:

Fiordiligi - Elsa Dreisig, celebrated for her radiant soprano voice and emotional depth.
Dorabella - Nina van Essen, whose vibrant mezzo-soprano captivates audiences worldwide.
Despina - Sandrine Piau, bringing charm and wit to the role of the mischievous maid.
Guglielmo - Luca Micheletti, a versatile baritone with magnetic stage presence.
Ferrando - Giovanni Sala, whose lyrical tenor conveys youthful passion.
Don Alfonso - Gerald Finley, a legendary bass-baritone, masterfully embodying the opera’s enigmatic philosopher.

Opera meets reality TV in Robert Carsen's compelling production. Teatro alla Scala closed its 2024-25 season with a new production by acclaimed stage director Robert Carsen who, true to his style, offers a contemporary reading that is as ingenious as it is coherent. Carsen relocates the action to the world of modern television, turning the protagonists into contestants on a dating reality show: a mix of ‘Temptation Island’, ‘The Bachelor’, ‘Perfect Match’, etc. a universe now saturated with such formats. The show, titled “La scuola degli amanti” (The School for Lovers), the opera’s original subtitle, tests the strength of the couples and exposes them to temptations, just as in real-life reality TV. Mozart's ‘opera buffa’ (comic opera) in two acts is sung in Italian with English subtitles.
