Iranian master director Asghar Farhadi (‘A Separation’, ‘About Elly’, ‘The Salesman’) transfers his talents to a European setting and Spanish-speaking cast, losing none of his remarkable ability to observe close relationships collapsing under stress
The film follows Laura (Penelope Cruz) on her travels from Argentina to her small home town in Spain for her sister's wedding, bringing her two children along for the occasion. Amid the joyful reunion and festivities, the eldest daughter is abducted. In the tense days that follow, various family and community tensions surface and deeply hidden secrets are revealed.
The gossipy title, as the best film titles do, mutates in meaning over the course of the film. As usual, Farhadi pulls off a powerfully twisted ending - what this family has done to itself reverberates long after the lights come up. (Subtitles)
