“All I ask is that you step with me into the boundlessness.” Béla Tarr

The opening sequences of films invite viewers into the visual and emotional landscapes that follow. Sometimes they introduce us to geographies, a mood or atmosphere, a mystery or dilemma, or to a character worth our time and attention. In contrast, film closings offer viewers a release - time to reflect on or reconsider what’s gone before, time to speculate about what happens afterwards.

In this interactive workshop we’ll explore how openings and closings function cinematically (with examples), and reveal how the digital age has affected their production and aesthetics. We will analyse in depth some outstanding openings (intense, visually striking and atmospheric) together with some exceptional closings – ones that complete the narrative, or remain opaque, leave us in a pool of deep reflection, or opportunistically invite us into a sequel. Everyone welcome. (No Sandwich service at this event). 240m
