A dark folk tale set in the stark beauty of 19th Century Snowdonia during the industrial revolution.
Gwen (Eleanor Worthington-Cox) is a young girl desperately trying to hold her home together - struggling with her mother Elen’s (Maxine Peak) mysterious illness, her father's absence and a ruthless mining company encroaching on their land. As a growing darkness begins to take grip of her home, the local community grows suspicious and turns on Gwen and her family. It’s a bleakly beautiful film, full of angry skies and distant thunder.
Dark figures prowl at night, animals meet untimely ends and a hollow-eyed Elen is afflicted by an increasing irascibility and mysterious convulsions. Director McGregor creates real tension right from the start, stirring in scary images and sounds that build a gnawing sense that something terrible is coming.
