In Detail

Hirokazu Kore-eda is Japan’s most highly regarded filmmaker of his generation. Awards at international festivals, including at Cannes for his child-swapping drama ‘Like Father, Like Son’ in 2013 and again in 2018 for the much grimier family portrait of ‘Shoplifters,’ have been matched by box-office success in his homeland.

He has also worked in France, making ‘The Truth’ (La Vérité, 2019) with Catherine Deneuve and Juliette Binoche, and South Korea, with ‘Broker’ (2022) starring Song Kang-ho and Bae Doona.

In this illustrated talk, critic and Japanese film specialist Jasper Sharp, who has interviewed Kore-eda on several occasions, will guide the audience across Kore-eda’s illustrious career.

He will detail the main thematic and stylistic concerns in the director’s subtle, humanistic dissections of modern-day family life in Japan, all its formulations and constitutions, and how a background in television documentary has informed the director’s ongoing investigations into the relationship between truth, fiction, memory and narrative.
