In this third offering of remastered Comedy Genius from the BFI, a newspaper editor uses every trick in the book to keep his ace reporter ex-wife from remarrying.
With Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell in the leading roles trading whip-smart put-downs and wisecracks at breakneck speed, the movie’s reputation as the fastest-talking comedy in Hollywood history is well deserved. Howard Hawk’s film is about attraction, ambition and work, and hasn’t lost its gloss even after 78 years - it’s funny, and not in that appreciative-titter “Ah, that was the Golden Age” way.
The movie bears reviewing because there is always something new in the confetti of one-liners, while its depiction of journalism remains relevant: “Take Hitler and stick him on the funny page! . . . Keep the rooster story - that’s human interest.”
This season is part of 'Comedy Genius', a nationwide celebration of comedy on screen led by BFI, the Independent Cinema Office and BFI Film Audience network, supported by funds from the National Lottery. For more screenings go to bficomedy.co.uk. #bficomedy
