John Le Carré on Screen

A Wilderness of Mirrors

Patrick Hargood | 2024 | 100 MINS
Film Talk

As a stage version of his most famous novel ‘The Spy Who Came in From the Cold’ comes to Chichester Festival Theatre, this talk will cover 60 years of film and TV adaptations of the novels by the former MI5 and MI6 agent.

In Detail

Although they may not quite match the box office pull of James Bond, the novels of former spy David Cornwell, alias John le Carré, have proved to be enduringly popular on both the big and the small screen.

Two further series of ‘The Night Manager’ (also remade in Hindi!) are on the way and among the adaptations discussed in this talk (with plenty of clips) by Patrick Hargood, the cinema education officer, will be ‘The Constant Gardener’ and both the TV and the film version of ‘Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.’ Often seen as ‘anti-Bond’, le Carré’s books drew on his experience in both MI5 and MI6 and offer a far greater degree of authenticity compared to 007.

On screen they have also provided some career defining roles for actors including Richard Burton, Alec Guinness, Ralph Fiennes, Gary Oldman and Tom Hiddleston, as well as former Bonds Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan.
