Film Talk

In the second of two events this season linked to productions at Chichester Festival Theatre, this talk explores the fascinating story behind ‘My Fair Lady’.

In Detail

70 years ago, Lerner and Loewe adapted George Bernard Shaw’s ‘Pygmalion’ to create one of the most endearing of all romantic musicals. Yet Shaw hated the idea of any of his work being made into a musical.

He was the prolific author of more than sixty plays, several of which were filmed, including the original non-musical version of ‘Pygmalion’ and Andrew Vance of the Cinema Education Team will be considering how successfully they made it to the big screen.

Before working together on ‘My Fair Lady’ lyricist Alan Jay Lerner and his composer partner Frederic Loewe had already created two huge successes, ‘Brigadoon’ and ‘Paint Your Wagon’ (both later made into successful films).

Among their subsequent hits were ‘Gigi’ and ‘Camelot’ and in the second half of his talk Andrew will apply his considerable knowledge of both theatre and cinema in evaluating the success of their transition from stage to screen.
