Jacques Offenbach’s fantastical opera ‘Tales of Hoffman’ kicks off the Metropolitan Opera’s season. It will make an interesting comparison with the Royal Opera's version showing in January 2025.

In Detail

French tenor Benjamin Bernheim stars in the title role of the tormented poet. Joining him is American soprano Erin Morley as Olympia, South African soprano Pretty Yende as Antonia, and French mezzo-soprano Clémentine Margaine as Giulietta to complete Hoffmann’s trio of lovers.

Conducted by Marco Armiliato. The action of the prologue and epilogue takes place in an unnamed German city, in “Luther’s tavern” recalling the Faust legend and casts an otherworldly ambience on the subsequent episodes.

Each of these flashbacks occurs in evocative settings representing a cross-section of European cultures: Paris (Act I), Munich (Act II) and Venice (Act III).
