Madama Butterfly (ROH 24)

Moshe Leiser & Patrice Caurier | 2024 | 165 MINS
UK | Subtitles

Giacomo Puccini was entranced by David Belasco’s play ‘Madame Butterfly’ when he saw it in London in 1900. He drew on Japanese folk melodies to create his Butterfly score and each aria is imbued with distinct emotion.

In Detail

With a score that includes Butterfly’s aria, 'Un Bel dì, Vedremo' (‘One Fine Day’) and the ‘Humming Chorus’, Puccini’s opera is entrancing and ultimately heart-breaking.

He collaborated with librettists Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa (with whom he had created ‘La Bohème’ and ‘Tosca’) to adapt Cio-Cio-San’s tragic tale for the operatic stage.

Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier’s exquisite production takes inspiration from 19th-century European images of Japan. Asmik Grigorian and Hrachuhí Bassénz share the role of Cio-Cio-San, with Kevin John Edusei conducting. Sung in Italian with English subtitles.
