Madame Bovary

Claude Chabrol | 1991 | 143 MINS
France | Subtitles
French Film Festival UK

In 19th-century France, Emma Bovary, a farmer’s daughter brought up in an elegant convent, marries a dull country doctor and is soon searching for distractions.

In Detail

Full of romantic aspirations and dreams of luxury, she soon throws herself into love affairs to escape boredom. Claude Chabrol’s adaptation of Gustave Flaubert’s novel offered Isabelle Huppert one of her best roles.

Chabrol's ostensibly placid version of Madame Bovary invests Flaubert's portrait of stifled womanhood with unmistakable flintiness. It chafes against the beautiful images with perfect irony. It screened as part of the official selection of the first French Film Festival in 1992.

Cast includes Jean-François Balmer and Christophe Malavoy.
