Married Irish couple Stella (Lesley Manville) and Gerry (Ciaran Hinds) are in their 60s and have lived an ordinary life near Glasgow since escaping the Troubles.
Stella decides to book a trip to Amsterdam for the pair in what appears to be an attempt bring some excitement into their relationship.
Once they arrive, she is keen to visit a particular part of the city which may have a link to their past. The drama is leavened with touches of humour – little jokes about Irishness, or about how comfortable people get in their marriages in later life – balancing the film beautifully.
This stirring meditation on faith, commitment and the enduring power of love is based on the novel by Bernard MacLaverty.
