In Detail

Set in Britain’s Home Counties between the wars, Australian star Odessa Young plays Jane, the maid at a grand house ruled over by the sad Mr and Mrs Niven (Colin Firth and Olivia Colman) whose children were killed in the war. Jane is enjoying an affair with a well-born young neighbour who is destined to marry someone else.

The grand lesson that “Mothering Sunday” teaches, and the one Jane must learn from tragedy after tragedy is that neither the pleasure or the pain, is ever permanent. This is a languorous, dreamy film that draws you into an irresistible and sensual story that is beautifully shot and acted.
