Neil Brand on West Side Story

Repainting the Sistene Chapel

Neil Brand | 2022 | 120 MINS
UK
How does Spielberg's new version of ‘West Side Story’ reflect on the original film (1961) and the show itself? And what do all three versions of this extraordinary musical tell us about the audiences for which they were intended?

In Detail

Neil Brand takes the long view, fully illustrated with clips, of one of the greatest musicals of all time, from its inception with the original creative team of Leonard Bernstein (composer), Stephen Sondheim (lyrics), and Jerome Robbins (choreography), to its adaptation for audiences of 2022, and asks what it is about a great show that remains timeless.

Neil Brand is a composer, writer and broadcaster best known for his 'Sound of...' series on BBC4, as well as a regular pianist accompanying silent cinema at the National Film Theatre.
