In Detail

Tormented by guilt following the accidental death of his older brother in a sailing accident, alienated teenager Conrad Jarrett (Timothy Hutton, the youngest ever winner of the Best Supporting Actor Oscar) attempts suicide.

Returning home following an extended stay in a psychiatric hospital, Conrad tries to deal with his mental anguish and to reconnect with his emotionally unavailable mother, Beth (an astonishing Mary Tyler Moore), who tacitly blames him for the accident, and his overly accommodating father, Calvin (Donald Sutherland), with the help of his psychiatrist, Dr. Berger (a career-best Judd Hirsch).

Redford’s transition from a major Hollywood leading man to a behind-the-camera visionary redefined his career. His nuanced, sensitive direction, along with the raw unflinching, performances he draws from the film’s cast created a lasting cinematic touchstone regarding mental health, grief and the importance of open communication. Not to be missed.
