Thus begins a yearlong odyssey for Martha, who must grieve while working through fractious relationships with Sean and her domineering mother (Ellen Burstyn), along with the publicly vilified midwife (Molly Parker), whom she must face in court.
Kirby was nominated for an Oscar, and deservedly so. She draws us into Martha's emotional journey as she navigates her way through her grief. Ellen Burstyn is marvellous as Martha’s overbearing mother, delivering a tour de force of coiffed toxicity.
This is an emotionally demanding piece of cinema that will test your mettle and reward you in equal measure.
