In Detail

Amanda (Juliette Binoche) is an academic who has temporarily moved from Newcastle to North London to be closer to her mother, Leslie (Anna Calder-Marshall) – who has advanced dementia – and her stepfather, Martin (Tom Courtenay).

One morning when Amanda checks in on the couple, she finds them in bed together, and the situation quickly spirals with Amanda accusing Martin of a crime and calling the police. Has Amanda mishandled the situation? Has Martin taken advantage of his wife?

These questions are dealt with both compassion and strategic detachment by the very talented director Lance Hammer. This moving film which presents an unsentimental yet highly empathetic meditation on the limits of love in the face of the brutal march of time, has been highly acclaimed by film critics from around the world, many comparing it with Michael Haneke’s ‘Amour’.
