In our second of four Metropolitan Opera Summer Encores, we present the most famous couple in all of western literature and quite possibly the world - Romeo and Juliet.
In Shakespeare’s hands, the story is filled with emotional weight and political intrigue. In the hands of Charles Gounod, the opera ‘Romeo et Juliette’ is an extended love duet.
A pair of charismatic artists with wonderful chemistry, tenor Vittorio Grigolo and soprano Diana Damrau are the star-crossed lovers of Gounod’s dreamy adaptation of this timeless tragedy. Gianandrea Noseda conducts. Sung in Italian with English subtitles. Recorded in 2016.
