Based on Peter Hoeg's bestseller, this film is set in snowy Copenhagen where a small boy is found dead after he fell off a roof. Billie August's film has been seen as a precursor to the Scandinavian noir films and TV fare.
Smilla Jasperson (Julia Osmand), a close friend who lives in the same house begins to suspect murder because she knows that the boy was afraid of heights and would not have played on the roof. As she begins to investigate, she is pulled deeper and deeper into a conspiracy that could very well mean her death. Smilla uncovers a trail of clues, leading her towards a secretive corporation that has made several mysterious expeditions to Greenland. What are they looking for? Were they somehow responsible for the boy's death?
The script has been skilfully adapted by Ann Biderman into English from Peter Hoeg's internationally acclaimed novel, and the film is superbly photographed by Jorgen Persson. Supporting cast includes , Gabriel Byrne, Jim Broadbent, Tom Wilkinson.
