CRAFTING THE CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPE OF BRITISH CINEMA
Lynne Ramsay and Andrea Arnold’s work has shaped the landscape of contemporary British cinema through their authentic depictions of working class characters.
Ramsay’s visually poetic style is imbued with a dream-like surrealism, expressed through her films like ‘Ratcatcher’ (1999) and ‘Die My Love’ (2025).
Andrea Arnold has crafted a filmmaking style that captures the psychological states of her characters in ‘Fish Tank’ (2009) and ‘American Honey’ (2016). She has achieved this through a raw social realism and intimate cinematography that expresses character experiences through a focus on movement, dancing, and the body.
Freelance researcher and writer on film Jade Evans will explore how both Ramsay and Arnold, as well as the films of their contemporaries, including Carol Morley’s ‘The Falling’ (2014) and Clio Barnard’s ‘The Selfish Giant’ (2013), have crafted distinctive filmmaking styles that capture the psychological states of their characters, and created stories that explore themes of girlhood and the working class experience.
