In Detail

Film adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays have abounded over the years, alongside a host of movies inspired by our greatest dramatist, including Kurosawa’s ‘Ran’ (based on ‘King Lear’) and ‘The Lion King’ (based on ‘Hamlet’).

This talk, illustrated by a range of clips, by Nick Johnston-Jones and Patrick Hargood, of the Cinema Education Team, will look back at a range of Shakespearean movies, from early pioneers of the medium to leading auteurs such as Olivier, Welles and Branagh and masters from other cultures including Kurosawa, Kosintsev and Zeffirelli.

Among the films likely to be featured will be Welles’s ‘Othello’ and the extraordinary 1935 Hollywood version of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and we will consider what makes a successful Shakespeare film.

We will conclude the talk by offering our own joint list of the ten greatest Shakespeare films and look forward to a lively Q&A at the end!
