Festival Film Talk

To mark the centenary of his birth and ten years after his death, this talk will look back at the astonishing career of the Polish auteur.

Andrzej Wajda

In Detail

Creatively active for over six decades, Andrzej Wajda amassed one of the largest and most impressively wide-ranging bodies of work of any European filmmaker, although he kept returning obsessively to his core subject: the fate of his native Poland at pivotal historical junctures.

He tackled the Napoleonic Wars, Poland’s turbocharged industrial revolution, the Katyń massacre that killed his own father, the fate of Poland’s Jews, the Warsaw Uprising, life (and art) under Communism, as well as adaptations of great Polish literature, all invariably dramatised via unforgettably muscular images that drew extensively upon his early training as a painter.

This heavily illustrated talk by longstanding Sight & Sound contributor Michael Brooke will range over Wajda’s entire film career, including such neglected areas as his little-seen 1990s output and the television work, while paying tribute to three great Polish stars that he discovered and nurtured: Zbigniew Cybulski, Daniel Olbrychski, and Krystyna Janda.
