Film Talk

With ‘Cesar and Rosalie’, starring Yves Montand and Romy Schneider screening in this year’s French Film Festival, this talk looks back at the remarkable career of its director, Claude Sautet.

In Detail

Cinema is a collaborative endeavour, and many of the best films have arisen from a simpatico relationship between a director and an actor or actors.

Claude Sautet worked repeatedly with some of the finest actors in French cinema, including Romy Schneider (five times), Michel Piccoli (four times) and Yves Montand (three times), in films which he co-wrote as well as directed.

This talk, by Patrick Hargood, the Cinema Education Officer, illustrated by a range of clips, will look back at a remarkable body of work, chronicling middle class French life in the second half of the 20th century, including ‘A Heart in Winter’, ‘Nelly and Monsieur Arnaud’ and ‘Cesar and Rosalie’, the last of which is screening in this year’s French Film Festival.

This is a great opportunity to get to know a French master you may not have encountered previously.
