A Chinese family discovers their grandmother has only a short while left to live and decide to keep her in the dark, scheduling a wedding to gather before she dies.
Billi’s (Awkwafina) woes take a back seat when her parents get word that her beloved grandmother, Nai Nai (Shuzhen Zhao), who lives in China, has been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Nai Nai is the only one who does not know the bad news. So the only way everyone in the far-flung family can have an excuse to see her one last time without arousing suspicion is to stage some other, happier, life-changing event: a wedding.
Directed and written by Lulu Wang, who based it on an incident that happened in her family, this film which has been praised by critics, and deftly captures complicated family dynamics with a poignant, well-acted drama that marries cultural specificity with universally relatable themes.
