- plus optional Tangmere Tour
During World War II, the English mathematical genius Alan Turing tries to crack the German Enigma code with help from fellow mathematicians while attempting to come to terms with his troubled private life.
1939. Newly created British intelligence agency MI6 recruits Cambridge mathematics alumnus Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch) to crack Nazi codes, including Enigma - which cryptanalysts had thought unbreakable. Turing's team, including Joan Clarke (Keira Knightley), analyse Enigma messages while he builds a machine to decipher them. Turing and team finally succeed and become heroes, but in 1952, the quiet genius encounters disgrace when authorities reveal he is gay and send him to prison. With an outstanding starring performance from Cumberbatch illuminating its fact-based story, ‘The Imitation Game’ serves as an eminently well-made entry in the "prestige biopic" genre.

TANGMERE AND THE ENIGMA STORY
Exhibition at Tangmere Museum
A temporary exhibition on ‘Tangmere and the Enigma Story’ will be held at Tangmere Military Aviation Museum from 1 July until 2 Sep 2023. It will cover how in 1933 three Polish mathematicians broke the encoded messages of the German Military Enigma cipher machine and how a French Colonel who had assisted in breaking the Enigma codes was rescued in 1944 by a Special Duties Lysander aircraft from RAF Tangmere. The exhibition will be located in the Museum’s Merston aircraft hall adjacent to a full-size replica of a Special Duties Lysander aircraft. Also on display will be a replica Enigma machine built in-house for the exhibition by the Museum’s Engineering Special Projects Team.
