Through tragedy and triumph, under the shadow of their domineering father and coach Fritz (Holt McCallany), the brothers Kevin (Zac Efron), Kerry (Jeremy Allen White), Mike (Stanley Simons) and David (Harris Dickinson) seek larger-than-life immortality on the biggest stage in sports.

Everyone puts in a great performance here, but it is Efron, his outrageously muscled body made beatific with a Joan of Arc bowl cut, who softens the film’s harder knocks with a performance of disarming tenderness.
