At her family's home on a Finnish island, young Sophia (Emily Matthews) explores the natural world with her father (Anders Danielsen Lie) and grandmother (Glenn Close).
Together, they forge an existence on the island - a day trip to a neighbouring island; they adopt a cat; plant a tree – all the while learning about each other’s needs.
This is such a beautifully poetic film, conveying profound thoughts about time, memory, loss and nature through a meditative cinematic language of exquisite images and music.
Adapted from Tove Jansson's beloved novel, this delicate account of growing up and growing old perfectly partners with the glorious Finnish landscape. Glenn Close is superbly cast and delivers an award-worthy performance, also drawing a lovely performance from newcomer Emily Matthews as the granddaughter.
