Stark but utterly compelling, this chilling take on Macbeth is a visually stunning tour de force. Macbeth witnesses three witches foresee his future as a nobleman rising to take the throne of the kingdom. Lady Macbeth quickly hatches a murderous plot to hasten his ascension. Phenomenally dark and wicked and filmed in ghostly monochrome, this is theatrical and cinematic at the same time.
The text is cut right back and Washington and McDormand find fresh spins on familiar phrases. Could McDormand scoop consecutive Oscars? On this form it would be no surprise. 5 stars – The Guardian.
