In Detail

The beautiful and ravishing Dominique Marceau (Bardot) escapes her provincial life for freewheeling bohemian Paris only to find herself standing trial for the accidental murder of her lover (Sami Frey), a young but promising conductor.

As the prosecution and the defence spar over what led her to such violence, Dominique’s life is laid bare.

Clouzot’s film pushed the boundaries of its era, a scathing examination of the way in which patriarchal societies exert control over women through hypocritical moralising.

The director, already known for ‘Le Corbeau’, ‘Les Diaboliques’ and ‘The Wages of Fear’ at the time, captured Bardot at her most dynamic in a performance which rivals any of her work with New Wave colleagues.
