It centres on humble farmer Wat Tyler (played by Andrew Garfield) who rallies thousands of commoners to march on London to protest against the brutal poll-taxes which came after the Black Death and demand socio-economic reform from the 14-year-old King Richard II. The impressive cast includes Jamie Bell, Stephen Dillane, Jonny Miller and Tom Hollander. Greengrass’ trademark sense of immediacy and urgency is in full force here, creating battle scenes of raw, immersive, visceral, chaos. Nobody does it better.
