A naturalistic, almost documentary-like feature that slowly builds into a film that is both startlingly direct and full of resonance and ambiguity.
A group of German construction workers start a tough job at a remote site in the Bulgarian countryside. The foreign land awakens the men's sense of adventure, but they are also confronted with their own prejudice and mistrust due to the language barrier and cultural differences. The stage is quickly set for a showdown when men begin to compete for recognition and favour from the local villagers.
The story is a faultlessly observed, broodingly intelligent piece of realism, a dispatch from a sun-baked frontier that could hardly feel more mundane or specific, but which director Grisebach somehow suffuses with the beauty and power of myth. A totally absorbing film.
