Following a short run of the new Spielberg version of ‘West Side Story’ last week, and a single screening of the 1961 version on Saturday morning (12 Mar), Neil Brand reflected on the two, alongside the original stage musical to a very welcoming audience in the main auditorium.
Neil’s talk, illustrated with clips, delved into the show’s inception with the original creative team of Leonard Bernstein (composer), Stephen Sondheim (lyrics), and Jerome Robbins (choreography), to its adaptation for audiences of 2022, and asked “what it is about a great show that remains timeless”.
Neil Brand is a composer, writer and broadcaster best known for his ‘Sound of…’ series on BBC4, as well as a regular pianist accompanying silent cinema at the National Film Theatre.
