On Tuesday 23 January, Roger Gibson was given the Honour of Freedom of the City by Chichester Mayor Craig Gershater at the Assembly Rooms in North Street. Roger’s work in the community to promote film and cinema is unrivalled not only on a local level, but nationally as well.
A large number of cinema lovers, friends and family joined Roger and the Chichester City Counsellors for this prestigious event.
It should be noted that this award is given out very rarely, and is considered the highest honour given by the Chichester City Council. Recent recipients include The Duke of Richmond and Gordon (2008) and astronaut Tim Peake (2018).
The Mayor led proceedings, alongside some moving tributes from Counsellor Clare Apel, and long-time New Park Cinema supporter and family friend John Coldstream.
Roger took the stage to thank the audience, and to receive the Freedom of the City scroll. He thanked those assembled and made special mention of the fact that this award was celebrating and rewarding film & cinema, an art which is usually left by the wayside when it came to awards and support. We echo Roger’s sentiment, and thank Chichester City Council for their recognition of this most collaborative of all the arts.
