It was one of the first films to integrate musical numbers into the plot, and explores, without condescension or simple-mindedness, the feelings that drive the Smith family members apart and then bring them back together again. You could see the entire film as a brilliant showcase for its sensational song: 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas', which Garland sings in the presence of her sobbing sister, with her eyes upturned like a sorrowing saint.
