Streetwise but down-on-his-luck, Clarence (LaKeith Stanfield) is struggling to find a better life for his family, while fighting to free himself of debt.
Captivated by the power and glory of the rising Messiah and His apostles, he risks everything to carve his own path to a divine life, and ultimately discovers that the redemptive power of belief may be his only way out. Director Samuel shows great skill in the way he presents historical figures such as Jesus, Judas, and the apostles, and then finds a way to have these larger-than-life figures feel grounded yet still have an air of legend to them.
A funny spin on Biblical themes, but do not be surprised if you find yourself crying before the film’s end - and thinking about it long after you leave the auditorium. If in 15 years-time this film is considered a cult classic, it would not be a shock.
