‘Every man should pull a boat over a mountain once in his life’

Werner Herzog is one of the key filmmakers in cinema history. His films such as ‘Fitzcarraldo’, ‘The Enigma of Kasper Hauser’ (screening Tue 19 May, 18:15) and ‘Cave of Forgotten Dreams’ are masterpieces of cinema.
Visually stunning, they illustrate why Herzog is regarded by many as one of the greatest directors in cinema history, and they can astound us with their imaginative interpretation of characters and their journeys.
They explore extraordinary stories of people’s dreams, their persistence in the battles to overcome hardships and setbacks, and their determination to reach their goal in often unfamiliar landscapes, sometimes leading to danger, failure or death.
This talk, by John Harte and Mike Jennings of the cinema’s Education Team, in a second collaboration with the Friends of Speyer, explores Herzog’s fascinating life and career as a writer, director and actor, and features many extracts from both his feature films and his documentaries.
