In Detail

Anouk Aimée (1932–2024)

Praised for her enigmatic beauty and subtle acting talent, Anouk Aimée, has left her mark on European cinema. Born Nicole Françoise Dreyfus, she changed her name twice.

First, in Occupied France, to Françoise Durant to avoid deportation, and after the war when she started her film career at age fourteen after being spotted by chance in a Parisian restaurant. Then, she worked with Marcel Carné and Julien Duvivier, among others, and befriended poet and screenwriter Jacques Prévert, who suggested her stage name. Anouk Aimée reached cinematic fame in the 1960s.

A rising star in Fellini’s ‘La Dolce Vita’ (1960) and ‘8½’ (1963), she became a French New Wave icon as a cabaret dancer in Jacques Demy’s ‘Lola’ (1961) beforeClaude Lelouch’ s ‘Un Homme et Une Femme’ (1966) — screening in this year’s French Film Festival - brought her international fame.

This talk, by Dr Martine Pierquin (French Film Festival UK), will discuss Anouk Aimée’s career and most iconic roles.
