Following the screenings of the film ‘Lee’ (see above), with Kate Winslet as the photographer Lee Miller, this talk will take a look at Surrealist cinema, including Miller’s only film as an actor, Jean Cocteau’s ’The Blood of a Poet’.

In Detail

This talk by Sharon-Michi Kusunoki, Executive Director of Surrealism and the Arts, will introduce the mesmerizing world of surrealist cinema, a genre that challenges our perception of reality as it oscillates between the realms of dream and wakefulness.

Drawing from art historian Michael Richardson's idea of surrealist cinema as ‘an activity with broadening horizons,’ this talk will guide us through a selection of iconic clips from visionary filmmakers such as Luis Buñuel, Jean Cocteau, Salvador Dalí, Alfred Hitchcock, and others.

These cinematic works transcend traditional entertainment pushing the boundaries of perception and expanding our understanding of reality and imagination. By exploring the surreal, the dreamlike, and the bizarre, we will examine how these works question conventional narratives and invite us to reconsider the potential of cinema as a medium whereby the limits of possibility are continually challenged, redefined and reimagined.
