In Detail

The names of British filmmaking moguls like Michael Powell, John Schlesinger and Michael Balcon have dominated British film history, overshadowing the film stars who contributed to making their films a success.

From Julie Christie’s collaboration with costume designer Julie Harris that created her Academy Award winning style in ‘Darling’ (1965) to Moira Shearer’s dancing prowess which made her enduring image in ‘The Red Shoes’ (1948) possible, traces of their agency and star labour have been rendered invisible in favour of celebrating the work of male filmmakers.

Contextualising film clips with archival treasures including fan magazines and unpublished production designs, costume designs, correspondence and more, this talk, by film writer and presenter Jade Evans, illuminates the stories behind the screen and explores how women stars like Julie Christie, Jessie Matthews, Diana Dors and Moira Shearer have and contributed to the British film industry’s distinctive style and overall success.
