Sculptures in Time
FROM 10 Oct

Andrei Tarkovsky is arguably one of the greatest masters of world cinema, and, despite a small body of work, his influence has been tremendous. A martyr and a prophet in his native Russia, he is for cineastes in the west a venerated artist, creating a series of cult classics.
However, for audiences the world over, he remains misunderstood. In this talk, Dr Stavroula Varella-Barker, from the Cinema’s Education Team, an academic and writer, with a particular interest in European cinema, will demystify Tarkovsky’s oeuvre and discern the poetry beneath.
Sixty years ago, Tarkovsky said that truthfulness was his guiding principle and, in our post-truth times, his vision acquires a new sense of urgency, as does our duty to pay tribute. His ‘slow cinema’ is indeed an antidote to our accelerated lifestyles, while his dreamlike cinematography makes for melancholy escapism.
Join us to discover Tarkovsky’s films and discuss the sights and sounds, philosophical allegories, and deep spiritualism that impel his storytelling.
