A GREENER SCREEN - Film Talk

To accompany our season of films ‘A Greener Screen’, this talk will explore the ways in which environmental issues have been portrayed in cinema.

In Detail

In this talk, Lynn Keltie, a member of the cinema’s education team, will show clips from films spanning over fifty years to demonstrate how they have tackled some of the major environmental challenges.

Examples are over population as in ‘Soylent Green’ (1973), water pollution and corporate greed in ‘Dark Waters’ (2019), destruction of natural habitats in ‘Avatar’ (2009) and, more recently, one of the most watched Netflix films of all time, the controversial ‘Don’t Look Up’ which highlights the outcomes of indifference to the climate crisis and our reluctance to listen to scientific facts.

With the world facing an ever-growing list of environmental concerns, films can help create a better understanding and awareness of these issues. Filmmakers have a unique opportunity to educate and inspire audiences about sustainability through the stories they tell.

By incorporating environmental themes into narratives, or producing documentaries that highlight environmental challenges, films can contribute towards fostering positive outcomes.
